I get that part. What I'm confused by is "String Theory is Chris's aunt". I can't imagine how an AU could make them biologically related, and I can't imagine Chris letting String Theory be his adoptive aunt.
In the Ward AU where String Theory is Chris' aunt, she's dating Ratcatcher.

Modern Screen, February 1940: Woeful and Wacky by John Franchey
Transcript of article:
Sad-eyed but full of tricks- that’s Mayor Mischa Auer
Those doleful eyes of Mischa Auer, so conspicuous by their contrast to the hilarious shenanigans he’s always pulling off, are no actor’s triumph. He deserves no credit. Life gave them to him. They mirror his personal history. They reflect war, work and woe.
In his last picture, “Destry Rides Again”, he set even the hard-bitten critics in the aisles with his buffooneries as a transplanted Cossack who had migrated without rhyme or reason to a western town where he undertook a spot of hoss-wrangling. A Russian cowboy he was, as fantastic as a séance of rug-cutting in a cathedral or Tony Galento in the role of a ballerina.
Funny? Of course. But ironic, too.
It so happens that Mischa Auer is a Russian expatriate, a scion of what he likes to call, with typical modesty, “the petty nobility.” And his real name is Mischa Simonowich Ounskowski. His father, a commander of a destroyer in the Imperial Russian fleet, went down with his ship in a skirmish with one of the Mikado’s men-of-war during the Russo-Japanese campaign.
He was four when his renowned grandfather, Leopold Auer, the outstanding violin virtuoso of this century and the teacher of Zimbalist, Elman and Heifetz, to name a few, took him under his wing. When a fiddle was thrust in his hands, he stared at it ruefully. He made a clean break of it. There just wasn’t the immortal urge within him, he told his great kinsman. Grandpa Auer took it very hard.
What he did have was a passion for the theatre. As a little shaver he used to haunt the back stages of the theatres at St. Petersburg, entranced with it all.
The Revolution broke with all its sudden fury and it became high time to think of self-preservation. Caught in the maelstrom, he was shipped with several hundred other boys of his age and social status to a forlorn town in Siberia, presumably to learn how to become a true Communist.
It was a miserable journey, four thousand miles across the steppes in coaches that offered only wooden benches on which to sleep. Once arrived at land’s end, they were dumped out and forgotten.
Here he discovered how relentless life can really be. Faced with starvation, he learned to ignore the proprieties. Together with his friends he formed a roving band equipped with knapsacks. They trudged from farmhouse to farmhouse begging, in the name of God’s mercy even a hard crust. It wasn’t easy. Poverty reigned over the whole countryside. When they couldn’t beg food, they stole it- just enough to keep themselves alive.
After two years, they were shuttled back to St. Petersburg. Some had perished. Mischa Auer had become a starveling gnome, and the mournful look had made its first appearance.
Worse misfortune was yet to dog him. Now the dread OGPU, the political secret service arm, outlawed all those suspected of having sympathetic leanings toward the old regime. The Auers were on the list scheduled for immediate liquidation. One jump ahead of arrest and oblivion, Auer and his mother fled. It was a heart-rending trek they made, mother and son, forging their way South to the Black Sea, fighting plague and hunger, and eventually reaching Constantinople then under the protection of the Union Jack.
Here his mother was attacked by typhus and died. And here she was buried in a Greek Orthodox cemetery overlooking the harbor. A boy of fifteen, he was now left to shift for himself. In time he beat his way into Italy where he hunted out a family friend who provided him with the address of grandfather Leopold, now in the United States. Soon help was on its way. The wanderer set sail for America, a wistful shadow of a boy who had compressed an eternity into his fifteen years.
Under his grandfather’s protection, he picked up the life thread. He was sent to the famous Ethical Culture School. His record here is less than average. He had no inclination for studies. His mind was alive only with dying. He could not escape the recollections of things he had seen and heard.
All concerned worked feverishly to salvage the shattered soul in the under-nourished body. It was slow work. But by the time he was seventeen, noticeable progress was apparent. Came the day when he remembered his former passion for the theatre. He decided to see what it had to offer him here in America
Not much, at first. But he persisted. Mere disinterest and rebuffs were nothing to him. He wouldn’t be downed. Finally Dudley Digges, just for his own amusement, presented him with a small role, that of an old man, in a mob scene.
This slight encouragement was enough to show him he was headed right. He worked up to stage manager, also under Digges. Then he landed the juvenile lead in Sudermann’s “Magda.” In due time the company landed in Hollywood. Here the movie bug bit him. He chucked overboard the legitimate stage.
If the stage was tough to crack, the movies were doubly tough. The studios wouldn’t even let him play an extra. Once, he will tell you, a director tossed him out of a Russian sequence because he didn’t look like a real Russian.
He did everything while waiting for the magnificoes to see the light. He even rounded up a bunch of musicians and leaded a jazz band, available for a modest fee for dances.
It was Director Frank Tuttle who discovered him. He thought the sad-eyed Russian was wonderful. In fact, he managed to find a spot for him  in every one of his productions. Before long the melancholy one became a figure in the film colony. He got bids right and left but only when they needed despicable-looking villains who’d blackjack one-armed widows and swipe their pitiful savings.
In vain did he protest that his dish was comedy. No one seemed to care. Not until Gregory La Cava, assigned to direct “My Man Godfrey,” happened to recall some of Mischa’s high jinks at a party years before, in which he had hung from the chandeliers in the character of a gorilla. La Cava felt that maybe this identical insanity would bolster the Godfrey saga. He took a chance, gave Auer a try. The waif pulled out all the stops. The fans howled, and at long last he who got slapped was definitely in.
At thirty-four, wacky and woeful, Mischa Auer sits atop his own peculiar Olympus contemplating the world beneath. An inimitable harlequin, nevertheless he has a curiously humble philosophy about success. He simply figures he was lucky.
Regarding his acting talent, a gift which some critic has been bold enough to hail in print as “an incomparable genius for mirth and merriment in a minor key” he is more curious still. He regards Mischa Auer as a “ham.” His explanation is child-like, very brief and simple.
“I got some parts in shows and finally came to be a pretty good ham. There was nothing to it. In time I got out to Hollywood and eventually they went for my stuff. What I can do is just damned foolishness, but I’m crazy about pictures.”
Outside of adding a few pounds to his frame and shooting some over fourteen inches skyward (he is now six feet two) the years have brought little noticeable change to the boy who fled from Russia. Today he’s as mournful-looking as ever, a streamlined, rapid-talking, mad Hamlet who hides his thoughts deep inside of him.
For all this inferior gloom, the Auer is a geyser of gags, antics and mummery. On the set he’s a volcano whose humor literally stops the show. Cameramen, directors, script girls- one touch of Auer’s laughter makes the whole set kin. When he played with Baby Sandy in “Unexpected Father,” he had the little shaver gurgling all day, so much so that at night there was a strange wailing in B.S.’s nursery. She missed this wonderful buffoon.
No single individual is more liked in Hollywood than Auer. He’s the life of every gathering he attends, his baleful eyes providing such amazing counterpoint to the high jinks he’s always perpetrating. Photographers covering the swanky premieres at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood never tire of exploding their flash bulbs at him. Just to be a pal he’ll push a peanut down the block with his nose, or walk a tight rope dressed in a hooped skirt.
“All you have to do is ask the guy,” a picture-taking admirer of Mischa’s explains.
Hostesses implore him to come to their parties and fall on his neck out of gratitude when he departs. He never makes an entrance. Actually, it’s an invasion.
This general popularity is attested to by his political triumph of summer last. All of a sudden he up and ran for mayor of Universal City against Hugh Herbert and Joy Hodges. He pranced home the winner. Out of sportsmanship he made la Hodges the Chief of Police and then began worrying about funds to build a jail large enough to house the crime wave that was sure to result from this selection.
Being Alcalde of Universal City is his pride and joy. He loves talk of the Utopia he’s “going to make” of the little community. He bustles around sporting the most outlandish badge of office you ever saw. He’ll unbutton his coat at the drop of a hint so as to show it to people.
He’s the interviewers’ delight. He makes it his business to astonish them by hook or crook. He’ll put on a show, if he has to.
“Auer may never inspire the press, but he’ll never bore them,” he told a paragrapher.
Once when he was being interviewed he decided on the spur of the moment to ring up his grandmother, Mrs. Leopold Auer. She kept him on the phone for almost an hour, while he groaned in his helplessness. When another writer, a lady this time, burst in she almost jumped out of her girdle. There was Mischa lying under the desk, tie akimbo and feet sprawled over the radiator, and spouting Russian at his relative lickety-split. The reporters looked at each other in amazement and wondered when the man with the straight jacket was coming for his charge.
These same journalists get little information out of Mayor Auer. He’s too busy entertaining them. If he does do any serious talking, he steers the conversation into the channel of the camera art, his favorite hobby. Then, what has started out as an inspection of the Auer life and personality degenerates into a volcanic monologue on the respective merits of the different kinds of film, a new filter that’s just hit the market or, maybe, a nifty developing solution dreamed up by one of his cronies who has the same hobby.
The thought of an elf as a husband is inclined to take your breath away, but married he is. To a lovely non-actress, nee Norma Tillman. He has a son and heir named Anthony, of whom he never tires of talking. They’re pals, father and son. Every now and then he and Anthony take a long walk, climb atop a little green hill and there Auer pere chants wild Slavic songs to the accompaniment of a Russian balalaika.
At home he’s a housewife’s delight- ready to tackle anything from dish-washing to beating the rug, if need be. He’s designed the wall-paper for his present home and equipped it with knick-knacks of his own creation.
In matters of dress he’s as careful as a debutante dreaming of her coming-out party. Which is why he’s one of the slickest figures in any formal gathering. He loves evening dress. No one in Hollywood looks jauntier in a white tie.
His hobby may be cameras and picture-taking but his passion is restrained roistering with fellow members of the old regime- and Hollywood has many of them. He and his playmates assemble at regular intervals dressed to the hilt. They dine sumptuously and then begin to tell sad stories of the deaths of kings and princes. They toast the glory that was old Ray-shya far into the night. Tears flow like rain upon the town when these sentimentalists start to relive the olden days.
When it gets threeish, the man with the baleful eyes straightens himself to his stiffest, clicks his heels, and salutes and departs. Tomorrow is another day and somewhere on Universal lot Baby Sandy may be waiting for a camera rendezvous with her goofy parent.

Part 1, Chapter 6-That’s Why I Told You to Escape; Scene 2
Fifth, Pierrot, pages 185-189
Once more a string of serial killings occurred in Rolled.
.
October 2nd.
Lower house congressman Elman Ordovan was murdered in Rolled’s 11th district.
He was the man who had pushed the most strongly for Julia’s resignation in parliament.
.
November 21st.
The body of Saintes Faraux Newspaper reporter Isidor Anguel was found in Rolled’s 2nd district.
He had knife wounds in his abdomen.
According to his colleagues, he was following up on the president’s scandal.
.
December 8th.
World Police investigator Jean Marcel went missing.
Two days later, on December 10th, a waterlogged corpse was found in the Orgo River. It was confirmed to be Jean.
He had been conducting an investigation into the cases of Elman and Isidor.
.
--Ayn’s thoughts whirled as he rested his eyes on the investigative documents before him in the inn.
He had once more returned to the city of Rolled. By all rights he should have come here much sooner.
As the case caused by “Fifth, Pierrot” was far from resolved.
.
Rin Chan had cooperated with the investigation, but had remained close-lipped on “Fifth, Pierrot”. She had told them that Pierrot had always worn his white makeup while she’d been in his clutches, and so she couldn’t really learn his face. Ayn didn’t know if that was true or not, but as long as she wasn’t a suspect he couldn’t afford to question her too harshly.
And the other person who knew the truth—Bruno, or rather Kaidor Blankenheim, had been killed before he could tell them everything.
The World Police was of the opinion that this too was the work of “Fifth, Pierrot”, but Ayn and Willus weren’t completely sure on that.
First, the modus operandi was different. “Fifth, Pierrot” generally committed his crimes away from prying eyes. But Kaidor’s killer had boldly slipped into a World Police facility of all places and killed him while evading surveillance.
Another difference was that the weapon used in Kaidor’s murder was not a knife. The wound was much wider than with the prostitutes, and his body had been completely stabbed through. It was likely a weapon with a longer blade than a knife.
Of course, as the circumstances of Kaidor’s case were different from that of the prostitute killings, it was possible that Pierrot had changed his methods.
Willus was currently pressing forward on that investigation.
Ayn had returned to Rolled in order to investigate into the serial killings that had once more begun in this city.
None of the current victims were prostitutes. A politician, a reporter, a policeman—The jobs were all different.
For that reason he couldn’t be completely sure that this string of murders was the work of “Fifth Pierrot”, but at the very least it was extremely likely that “Pere Noel” was involved.
Among the victims, both the politician and the reporter were people who had been dangerous to the president.
Taking only motive into consideration, one would arrive at the conclusion that it was either someone wishing to protect the president or the president herself that was carrying out these crimes.
However, the president had a strong alibi for each of the cases. At this point, she was under observation at all times. It would be very difficult for her to carry out the murders without anyone catching her.
Well then…What should I do first?
Rather than investigating into what had already transpired—perhaps it would be better to try and determine who the killer would target next. He had suspected that would lead him to some potential suspects.
All the people being targeted were either those that were a hindrance to the president, or those that were looking into the killer.
There were a fair bit of candidates there. It would be difficult to protect all of them, even if he called in reinforcements.
They couldn’t let there be any more victims.
Someone needed to catch the killer.
I need to think on this…What would be the best course of action.
But no good ideas came to mind.
--He decided to get some fresh air in the room. He opened the window and gazed at the scenery outside.
There were people lined up before a building he could see in the distance.
It was Milanais Theater. It seemed there was some sort of event going on there tonight.
Milanais Theater huh?
Ayn abruptly remembered something that had happened long ago.
.
Ayn had once had the bitter experience of letting a culprit get away.
It actually wasn’t that long ago; four years back. At the time Ayn was an officer newly hired on in Rolled.
There, he participated in an investigation to chase down a certain criminal. It was also the first time that he’d met Heidemarie.
The name of that criminal—was that of Pere Noel’s assassin, “Fifth, Pierrot”.
Naturally, it was a different person from the “Fifth, Pierrot” they were pursuing now. However, Ayn couldn’t help feeling like there was some connection between him and the existence of “Fifth, Pierrot” even so.
In that investigation four years before, Ayn had made a blunder. He’d caught sight of “Fifth, Pierrot”, and then allowed him to escape right under his nose.
This time…I’ll catch him for sure.
Ayn moved to close the window, having strengthened his resolve.
Just then, something came shooting his way with a great deal of force.
“Wha!?”
Thinking that a bird might be racing towards the window, Ayn hurriedly moved away.
It entered the room and then struck the wall.
“What’s this…?”
Ayn timidly approached the item stuck into the wall.
It was a small clump of lead. When he pulled it out, the lead cracked open and something fell from inside.
He scooped it up. It was a piece of paper, curled up into a cylinder.
When he opened it, this was written inside:
.
To Ayn,
Wait tomorrow at 2AM in front of the Abelard estate in the first district.
Heidemarie.

Uncredited Photographer     Isaac Babel, Odessa, Soviet Union     c.1924
All the people in our circle—brokers, shopkeepers, bank clerks, and steamship office workers—taught their children music. Our fathers, seeing no future for themselves, came up with a lottery. They played it out on the bones of little people. More than any other city, Odessa was possessed with this madness. And it’s true—for decades our city supplied the concert halls of the entire world with wunderkinds. Mischa Elman, Zimbalist, Gabrilowitsch came from Odessa, and Jascha Heifetz started out in our city.
When a boy turned 4 or 5 years old, his mother took this puny, feeble creature to see Mr. Zagursky. Zagursky ran a factory of wunderkinds, a factory of Jewish dwarfs in lacy collars and little patent leather shoes. He sought them out in the slums of Moldavanka, in the stinky courtyards of the Old Bazaar. Zagursky offered the initial direction, and then the children were sent to Professor Auer in St. Petersburg. A powerful harmony lived in the souls of these starvelings with blue, bloated heads. They became renowned virtuosi. And so my father decided to follow in their stead. Even though I had long since exceeded the age of wunderkinds—I was over 13—my height and puny physique made it possible for me to pass for an 8-year-old. That was the hope.
I was taken to see Zagursky. Out of respect for grandfather, he agreed to charge one ruble per lesson—a cheap rate. My grandfather, Levi-Itskhok, was the city’s laughing stock and its adornment. He walked around the streets in a top hat and decrepit cutoff boots and helped resolve some of the most opaque arguments. He was asked to explain what a tapestry was, why the Jacobins betrayed Robespierre, how artificial silk is produced, how a cesarean section is performed. My grandfather could answer all these questions. Out of respect for his learnedness and madness, Zagursky charged us one ruble per lesson. And in fact, he made an effort with me, only because he feared my grandfather, because in fact there was nothing to make an effort with. Sounds slipped off my violin like metal shavings. These sounds sliced even my heart, but my father wouldn’t give up. At home all they talked about was Mischa Elman, whom the czar himself had released from military service. Zimbalist, according to my father’s information, was introduced to the British king and played at Buckingham Palace. Gabrilowitsch’s parents bought two houses in St. Petersburg. Wunderkinds brought wealth to their parents. My father would have reconciled himself to poverty, but he craved fame.
“Impossible,” whispered those who ate dinner at his expense, “it’s impossible that the grandson of such a grandfather …”
But I had something different in mind. While playing through some violin etudes, I placed books by Turgenev or Dumas on the music stand, and while sawing away, I devoured page after page. During the day, I told tall tales to the neighborhood kids, and at night I transferred them onto paper. Composing fiction was a hereditary occupation in our family. Levi-Itskhok, having gone off his rocker in his old age, had for years been writing a tale titled Man Without a Head. I took after him.
Three times a week, encumbered by my violin case and music sheets, I dragged myself to Witte Street, the former Dvoryanskaya, to Zagursky’s. There, along the walls, awaiting their turn, sat Jewesses, their hysteria flaring. They pressed to their weak knees violins that exceeded the size of the children who were expected to perform at Buckingham Palace.
The sanctuary door would open. Brainy, freckled children would emerge from Zagursky’s office—unsteady on their feet, necks thin as flower stems, a manic fervor burning on their cheeks. The door would slam, swallowing the next dwarf. Behind the wall, straining himself, the teacher would sing and conduct with a bow, reddish curls, and frail legs. The director of a monstrous lottery, he populated Moldavanka and the black cul-de-sacs of the Old Bazaar with specters of pizzicato and cantilena. Later old Professor Auer would propel these tones to a diabolical brilliance.
There was nothing for me to do in this sect. Though a dwarf like the rest of them, I detected a different calling in the voice of my ancestors.
The first step was the hardest to make. One day I left home, saddled with the violin, its case, music, and 12 rubles in cash—the monthly payment for my lessons. I was walking down Nezhinskaya Street, and I should’ve turned onto Dvoryanskaya in order to get to Zagursky’s place, but instead I went up Tiraspolskaya Street and found myself in the port. I was allotted three hours, and they passed swiftly in Practique Harbor. Thus began my liberation. Zagursky’s anteroom never saw me again. More important matters took hold of all my existence. My classmate Nemanov and I now took to visiting an old sailor by the name of Mr. Trottyburn on board the steamship Kensington. A year my junior, Nemanov had been engaging in the most elaborate commerce in the world since the age of 8. He was a genius of commercial operations, and he fulfilled all his dreams. He’s now a millionaire in New York, director of General Motors, a company as mighty as Ford. Nemanov dragged me around with him because I obeyed him without a word. He bought contraband tobacco pipes from Mr. Trottyburn. The old sailor’s brother in Lincoln handcrafted these pipes.
“Gentlemen,” Trottybarn would say to us, “mark my words. One should make babies with one’s own hands … To smoke a factory-made pipe is the same as putting an enema into your mouth … Do you know who Benvenuto Cellini was? … Now that was a great master. My brother in Lincoln could tell you about him. My brother doesn’t get in other people’s way. But he’s convinced that one should make babies with one’s own hands, not other people’s … We cannot but agree with him, gentlemen.”
Nemanov sold Trottyburn’s pipes to bank directors, foreign consuls, rich Greeks—with a 100 percent markup.
The Lincoln master’s pipes breathed poetry. Each of them was invested with thought, that small drop of eternity. A yellow eye shone through their mouthpieces; their cases were lined with lustrous silk. I tried to imagine the life of Matthew Trottyburn in old England, the life of the last master of tobacco pipes, he who opposes the progress of things.
“We cannot but agree, gentlemen, that one should make babies with one’s hands …”
The heavy waves breaking against the sea wall separated me further and further from our home, redolent with onion and Jewish destiny. From Practique Harbor I relocated to the breakwater. There, on a scrap of a sandy bar, kids from Primorskaya Street hung out. From morning till night they refused to pull on their pants, diving under the scows, stealing coconuts for lunch, and waiting for the time of year when flat-bottomed vessels loaded with watermelons would start coming in from Kherson and Kamenka, and you could break the watermelons open against the moorings right there in the port.
Knowing how to swim became my dream. I was ashamed to admit to those bronzy boys that I, even though born in Odessa, hadn’t even seen the sea until the age of 10 and at 14 still couldn’t swim.
I had to learn such necessary things so late! As a child, nailed to the Gemara, I led the life of a sage; having grown up, I started climbing trees.
Knowing how to swim turned out to be unattainable. Fear of water on the part of all my ancestors—Spanish rabbis and Frankfurt money-changers—pulled me down to the bottom. Water didn’t hold me up. Whipped up and down, soaked with salt water, I would return to the shore—to my violin and music. I was tied to the weapons of my crime and lugged them around with me. The battle of the rabbis with the sea lasted until the moment when a local water God took pity on me. He was the proofreader for the Odessa News, Efim Nikitich Smolich. Empathy for Jewish boys lived in this man’s athletic chest. He reigned over swarms of rickety starvelings. Efim Nikitich collected them in the bedbug-infested cellars of Moldavanka, led them to the sea, buried them to the neck in the sand, did calisthenics with them, took them diving, taught them songs, and while they were roasting in direct sunlight, told them stories about fishermen and animals. Smolich explained to adults that he was an adherent of natural philosophy. Smolich’s stories made Jewish children explode with laughter; they squealed and nuzzled up to him like puppies. The sun sprinkled them with creeping freckles, freckles the color of lizards.
The old man silently observed my struggle with the waves from the sidelines. After seeing that there was no hope and I wasn’t meant to learn how to swim, he added me to the permanent residents of his heart. All of it was there with us; his merry heart never condescended, was never greedy or anxious … With his copper shoulders, the head of an aged gladiator, with his bronze, slightly bandy legs, he would lie among us behind the breakwater like a lord of those watermelon and kerosene waters. I grew to love this man the way only a boy suffering from hysterics and headaches could love an athlete. I stayed by his side and tried to ingratiate myself to him.
He said to me:
“Don’t worry … Work on strengthening your nerves. Swimming will come to you naturally … What do you mean the water doesn’t hold you up … Why shouldn’t it hold you up?”
Seeing how I felt, Smolich made an exception only for me among his disciples. He invited me to his clean, spacious attic covered in jute rugs, showed me his dogs, his hedgehog, his tortoise, his doves. In exchange for these treasures, I brought him a tragedy I had just composed.
“I just knew you dabbled in writing,” said Smolich. “You have that look … More and more you’re looking nowhere …”
He read my compositions, shrugged a shoulder, ran his hand through his tight grey curls, walked across the attic.
“I wouldn’t be surprised,” he drew out, growing silent after each word, “if you had a divine spark within you …”
We went out onto the street. The old man stopped, struck the pavement with his stick, and set his gaze on me.
“What is it that you lack? … Youth isn’t a problem, you’ll get over it with time … What you lack is a feeling for nature.”
He pointed his walking stick at a tree with a reddish trunk and low crown.
“What kind of tree is that?”
I didn’t know.
“What’s growing on that bush?”
I didn’t know that either. The two of us were strolling through a little park on Alexandrovsky Prospect. The old man aimed his stick at every tree, he grabbed my shoulder when a bird flew by and made me listen to different birdcalls.
“What bird is singing now?”
I couldn’t answer his questions. Names of trees and birds, their division into genera, where birds flew, from which direction the sun rose, when dew was heavier—all of that was unknown to me.
“And you have the audacity to write? … A person who doesn’t live in nature, the way a stone or an animal does, won’t come up with two decent lines in his entire life … Your landscapes resemble descriptions of set designs. For God’s sake, what have your parents been thinking about for 14 years? …”
What have they been thinking about? … Disputed IOUs, Mischa Elman’s mansions … I never said this to Smolich; I held back.
At home, during supper, I didn’t touch my food. It wouldn’t go down my throat.
“A feeling for nature,” I was thinking. “My dear God, why hadn’t I thought of it before? … Where would I find a person who would interpret birdcalls and names of trees for me? … What do I know about them? I might have been able to identify lilacs, and only when they were in bloom. Lilacs and acacias. Deribasovskaya and Grecheskaya Streets were lined with acacias …”
Over supper, my father told a new story about Jascha Heifetz. Before he got to Robin’s, he ran into Mendelsohn, Jascha’s uncle. The boy, it turns out, takes in 800 rubles for each appearance. Calculate how much it comes to with 15 concerts every month.
I calculated—it came to 12,000 a month. Multiplying and carrying the four in my head, I looked out the window. Striding across the narrow cement courtyard, his Inverness coat gently fluttering in the wind, reddish ringlets jutting out from under his soft fedora, strode Mr. Zagursky, my music teacher, leaning on a cane. One couldn’t say that he discovered my absence too early. More than three months had already passed since the day my violin had been deposited on the sand beside the breakwater … Zagursky approached the front door. I dashed to the back entrance, which had just the day before been nailed shut as a protection against burglars. Then I locked myself in the water closet. Half an hour later, the entire family gathered outside the door. Women cried. My aunt Bobka rubbed her fat shoulder against the door and burst into a fit of sobbing. My father was silent. Then he spoke more quietly and distinctly than he had ever spoken in his life.
“I’m an officer in the army,” said my father. “I have a country estate. I go hunting. The peasants pay me rent. I placed my son in a military boarding school. I don’t need to worry about my son …”
He stopped. Women were sniveling. Then a terrifying blow shook the water closet door. My father slammed his whole body against the door; he kept throwing himself at it.
“I’m an officer,” he wailed. “I go hunting … I’ll kill him … The end …”
The hook snapped off; there was also a latch, but it held by one nail. Women rolled on the floor. They clung to my father’s legs; enraged, he pulled away. My father’s elderly mother heard the noise and got there just in time.
“My child,” she said to him in Yiddish, “our sorrow is great. It is boundless. The last thing we need is bloodshed in our home. I don’t wish to see bloodshed in our home …”
My father groaned. I heard his departing steps. The latch barely hung by the last nail.
I sat until nightfall in my fortress. When everything settled, my aunt Bobka took me to grandmother’s. It was a long walk. Moonlight froze in unfamiliar bushes, in trees without names … An invisible bird whistled and expired, perhaps falling asleep … What bird was that? What’s it called? Is there dew in the evening? … Where’s the Big Dipper in the sky? From which direction does the sun rise? …
We walked along Pochtovaya Street. Aunt Bobka firmly gripped my hand so I wouldn’t run away. She was right. I was thinking of escape.

Screenland, December 1937: Candid Comic by Ruth Tildesley
Transcript of article:
He meant to be a painter. Mischa Auer, up to the age of twelve, attended the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, Russia, and dreamed of being a great artist. He was interested in working with oils rather than water colors, he liked color and he loved to try to catch blue shadows on snow, pastels in hanging icicles, the many greens in a garden, the flesh tones in a face. At twelve he was suddenly transformed from the sheltered child artist in the academy to a wild boy refugee, hiding in Siberian wastes and descending on passerby with his gang to rob and steal for food to eat and clothes to wear. Even then, despite hunger and hardship, homelessness, fear and grief, Mischa cherished the dream of creating a masterpiece.
“But it seems I am better at making funny faces than I am at painting a pretty one,” he observed, smiling his sad little smile. We were at his house in the Hollywood hills, where his studio windows look out over the wide sweep of the city. Light from the windows fell on the pictures mounted on sheets of cardboard that covered the piano, the tables, the couch and unoccupied chairs. “I arranged them for you,” he explained. “You might find something there. I am a fiend for the camera these days. Always when I look at something I see what I could do with it if I had my camera with me. I want to say, ‘Would you mind moving over here where the light is better?’ when I come on a fine face, full of character.”
Mischa didn’t give up his idea of painting even when, after desperate adventures, he reached the safety of New York to make his home with his grandfather Leopold Auer, famous violinist and teacher of Heifetz, Zimbalist, and Mischa Elman. “I wanted to paint, but there was always the necessity for eating,” he recalled, “so I took the closest thing and went on Broadway as an actor. From Broadway I progressed to Hollywood, where for a long time nobody seemed to be very pleased to have me. I mean as an actor. I shall never forget how kind they were to me as a man. Even the gas station man would say to me: ‘Pay me when you get a job. I know how it is.’ And the man who sells meat would tell me: ‘Why don’t you take this home now and later on you can settle for it?’ I had never thought there was so much kindness in the world! Americans are kind people, and generous. I always paid them, of course, but they were taking a chance.
Eventually, as everyone knows, a parlor act he had used to amuse the guests of a host was remembered by a director, who used it- and Mischa- in “My Man Godfrey”. And Mischa became a comic. Now, naturally, he thought of his great ambition. “I didn’t have time to take lessons, or to do the work that I should have done as an artist, because I was all the time working before cameras,” he explained, “so I took up photography. I didn’t expect it to do more than help myself relax from picture work. I bought an inexpensive camera and began to practice, using my wife and my baby son, Tony. The boy showed his appreciation of my new art by tossing the camera into the swimming pool! That encouraged me to go on and try to make good in his eyes. Now he is interested, too. He helps me make prints. We have a dark room in the basement here, where I do all my own developing as well as printing and enlarging. Come, see it!”
Tony, now about six, followed us down the winding stair to the narrow room, one end of which is the dark room, the rest the “portrait gallery,” where a complete assortment of lights, screens, and lenses would turn any other amateur cameraman green with envy.
“That’s a Mortinson screen,” Tony pointed out. He looked at me to see if I were suitable impressed. A Mortinson screen, I discovered, is an etching mask, which, used over a portrait or scenic shot, gives the appearance of an old etching. “We have movies, too,” went on Tony, rolling down a screen. “And talkies!”
“This is a story about candid cameras, please.” said Mischa.
“Anyway, show her the talking part,” urged Tony.
Mischa brought out the turntable, on which he plays records suitable to action on the screen. There are boat whistles, train whistles, traffic bells, soft, blaring or gay music. The Auers have complete records of all trips and all celebrations. So famous are Mischa’s portraits of sitters that he has turned the hobby into a charity. When he makes pictures of friends and acquaintances he charges them “whatever they care to pay” and turns the money over to the church where he and his family worship.
“I have a gadget for talking my own picture,” he observed, as we looked over the prints. “This one, with Rose Hobart and Vincent Price, walking in Central Park- I set the spring on the camera and ran and as we walked toward it, the shutter clicked and there we are! It is fun, for a joke, but I do not like my own picture. I was making some fashion shots that day, using the skyscrapers that edge the park for a background. People watched us, as they will do, and when I made the self-portrait, they couldn’t imagine what was wrong. Me rushing madly over to them and then all of us walking, with our teeth showing toward a tree!”
Children are Mischa’s favorite subjects. Tony’s is the usual child face seen in his shots, but while working in “Unexpected Father” the actor became intrigued with Baby Sandy and managed to snare several shots of her, which he considers among his best. “Children do not mind posing, if you make them thing it’s fun,” he said. “Children are co-operative people. You have only to say: ‘Will you help me, please? I wish to do so-and-so,’ and they are most gracious. Of course, Sandy is not yet of an age to understand, but she is no trouble.”
The only time Mischa ever lost his temper, according to Mrs. Auer, was the day they went out to Versailles, France, to get some pictures. After a twenty mile drive to the right spot, Mischa discovered he had loaded his pockets with film already exposed. “There are times when the camera makes me feel I am a temporary widow,” she confessed. “We can hardly take a walk down the street without Mischa finding something he simply must photograph. We dash back for the camera, and try to get back for the picture while the light is still good. What we had meant to do, usually escapes us.”
Mischa is to enter prints this winter in a salon competition. He has covered both the World’s Fair in New York and the Exposition in San Francisco, taken pictures from mountain tops, ocean liners, airplanes, and even from the back of a horse, but some of his finest shots have been made at social functions. Wearing white tie and tails, he wanders around among the guests, looking sad and gentle and snapping famous folk at unexpected moments. He has taken his camera into theatres, where from the front row he has made amazing shots of ballet dancers, chorus girls and burlesque queens. These go into the competition.
Mischa will have an exhibit in an art gallery, just as he dreamed at twelve. Judge for yourself if he should win a prize.

As one of the youngest and most prominent voices for peacebuilding in Somalia, Ilwad Elman has already been voted African Young Personality of the Year and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
A decade ago, Elman returned to Somalia, where the majority of Mogadishu and South Central Regions were lost to the Al-Qaeda linked terrorist group Al-Shabaab. It was here – in the wake of a devastating civil war that left 400,000 dead due to lack of food and water, and a generation of young Somalis traumatized by sexual warfare and violent child exploitation– that Elman and her mother opened the country's first rape crisis center.
The project has since been scaled to nine different regions while the Elman Peace Centre continues to develop programs for the disarmament and rehabilitation of child soldiers and adults defecting from armed groups.
In her short career, Elman has made an impact at the grassroots level and the international diplomatic stage. Her work has recently infiltrated the world of streetwear, offering a blueprint for how designers and platforms can empower activist projects in a meaningful way.
Elman sat down with Highsnobiety in Berlin recently while she was visiting to receive the 2020 German Africa Prize for her contributions to peacebuilding over the past decade. We spoke to her about her collaboration with Daily Paper, the healing power of surfing, and the intersection of activism, streetwear, and rehabilitation.
What sparked your interest in activism? My mom and my dad were both ardent human rights activists. Before the war in Somalia, they were focused on orphans and youth with substance abuse problems. When the war broke out, those very vulnerable young people were co-opted by the warlords and used as human shields to perpetuate the conflict.
[My parents] had a very simple recipe to building peace at the height of the conflict then, which was “drop the gun, pick up the pen,” giving young people an opportunity for education and skills training in exchange for handing in the weapons.
My father decided to stay in Somalia to continue to do the work, and my mother would leave the country with my sisters and I. Unfortunately, while we were on the traditional refugee route and finally got asylum in Canada, he was killed for the work that he was doing.
My sister and I always knew that there was a higher calling. We were always raised to know that you have to live your life with purpose, but moving back to Somalia and this kind of activism wasn't one that was prescribed to us. I think the torch of activism was just passed down.
What inspired you to try yoga and surf therapy to help survivors process their trauma?
I don't know if you’ve ever surfed before but it's very hard. It commands so much power in the body. We read all this research about how it's being used to treat PTSD in war veterans and so we were intrigued about introducing kids to the ocean, helping them to feel safe in the water with a partner, allowing them to trust someone and try to float, to focus on nothing else.
We're working with children in armed conflict and with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. What we’ve found is that, consistently, is that it's considered weak or ungrateful to even speak about the things that you are so lucky to have survived. [But] is there ever the [post] in post-traumatic stress disorder? When you're constantly in survival mode, constantly coping?
So we asked, “What are the things that create solidarity and community, and an opportunity to draw parallels between a physical activity and then a mental cognitive kind of situation?” We use that as an entry point of, okay, “When's the last time you felt safe in the water? When's the last time you actually laid back in the water and trusted someone to hold you up?” And then that creates a dialogue that you otherwise wouldn't have.
The same with our art therapy, give a kid a canvas and they will draw what is on top of mind. And we use this in our rehabilitation and reintegration program where kids stay with us. The collaboration that we did with Daily Paper actually took the drawings from some of the kids in our program. And that was, I think, a really interesting collaboration because it created immersive empathy.
So the Daily Paper collab was part of your art therapy project and incorporated illustrations by the kids in the project? How did this happen?
So, I know the founders. I met them on social media, [I was] just supporting and cheerleading the work that we were doing, and they asked, “how can we support you?”
It's a very conscious brand; they try to tell a story and try to cultivate a community around their consumers. It's not just about putting on really cool clothes but trying to send messages of solidarity of activism and activating the people that are in their community already.
The art therapy program is somewhere that we see the most impact and the transformational potential in healing society. In the humanitarian context, [art therapy] is still considered too fluffy or soft, and you can never get funding for these kinds of things. It created an opportunity where we could have an unconventional partnership with a brand, to actually tangibly support what we know to be a vital intervention.
Despite the kind of collaborations that we have with UN and government agencies, these things that actually shape identities and bring people together are really hard to get funding for. So that was one of the big achievements of that collaboration: The T-shirts sold out very fast and the [proceeds were] used to fund our art therapy program.
It was really nice to see people from all over the world rocking the tees and they had the kids' names on the tags. So they also felt really proud to see their creations everywhere.
What advice would you give someone who is looking to get into activism but might not know where to start?
I'm very inspired by the younger generations globally, generation Z. There’s no “activation” that's necessary. Our world seems to be fraught with more human suffering, whether it's climate change, manmade or natural disasters, and we're hyper-connected right now.
The younger generation right now is mobilizing and organizing. We're moving away from a slacktivism if you will, where you’re just reading an article or liking a post. Young people are actually getting on the front lines now.
I think that my advice for young people that want to be part of the change that they want to see in the world, and this is something I think was also a hard lesson for me too, is that you don't always have to start your own thing. It's always possible to also support an existing initiative, being a part of something.
The digital age that we're in right now provides opportunities for people from all over the world to align along with ideology and values. And sometimes that doesn't even have to be in-person. We're creating communities and subcultures and positive identities through online engagement, through social media, through cultural platforms like Highsnobiety, where we can actually pick our own tribe.
That will have reverberations beyond just the traditional field activism that some of us have taken on. So I think my biggest advice is just to educate yourself to be accessible, to put out your ideas because that does actually gravitate and create opportunities for co-creation and collaboration.
Right now we are more polarised than ever. What tools do you find helpful when you’re trying to find common ground on the international stage?
I think we're definitely in a polarized world right now. If there's any silver lining to this pandemic, I think it's that we all entered a crash course in empathy. Everywhere in the world, we essentially stood still at the same time. People were going through the same thing, suffering on the same scale. It shows how countries that are more developed, were maybe for the first time also understanding what loss could look like at such a massive scale as the global south.
I found that it's useful to lead with the things that I'm for, rather than the thing that I'm against. Because the things that I'm against will come with rebuttal or disagreement. If I talk about the things that I'm for in more of a proactive solution-oriented approach, I feel like that helps create a better sense of understanding.
